Young Professional

I'm still pretty young, why should I worry about retirement now?

That's exactly the point - your years until retirement may be your greatest financial asset. A good financial plan with appropriate goal and risk based investments, developed early in your earning years can be a tremendous asset later in life. If you don't make efforts early, there are no "do-overs".

Here's an example: Ben (25 YOA) is putting $500 a month into his 401K. He's unclear about his investment choices, so keeps things pretty conservative and is on track to earn a 5% return over a 30 year period. If Ben gets some assistance and better understands his investment choices, risk tolerance, expected fund returns and fees, a return of 9% may be possible. What's the end difference?

With the power of compounding returns over a long timeframe, the difference can be huge. Ben's return of 5% will provide him a nest egg of $398,366 after 30 years - decent, but probably not enough for retirement. If Ben is able to structure his investments for a 9% average return, his investment will grow to $817,845 - more than twice as much - an amount where retirement is looking possible.

Let's say Ben waits until he's 55 (30 years older) to get help and then takes his $398,366 to an investment advisor who helps him get to a 9% return until he's 60. The higher return, over these later 5 years, will only grow his investments to $648, 843. Meanwhile, if Ben gets help early and averages 9% including these additional 5 years (35 total), his 401K is now around $1,294,264 and at age 60, Ben is much more confident in his retirement plan.

(Returns are hypothetical for this example, but very realistic - the S&P 500 has averaged over 10% over the past 30 years.)

Making an investment in yourself and getting professional advice early in your career can make a huge difference. You won't be able to turn back the clock - time is your greatest asset - use it wisely.
