Macro Indicators:

The U.S. economy tracks six key macro level indicators. Understanding the movement of these can provide insight on the movement of the U.S. stock markets. 

Understanding macro indicators can provide insight on the direction of the broader stock markets. Many individuals invest in broad market index funds in their 401K or TSP.  Information regarding the direction of the indexes may allow investors to make informed decisions regarding asset allocation based on individual risk tolerance and personal timeframe for use of funds.

Below are the key economic indicators used to understand the direction of the the U.S. economy. 

Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

The value of the final goods and services produced in the United States is the gross domestic product. The percentage that GDP grew (or shrank) from one period to another is an important way for Americans to gauge how the U.S. economy is doing.

Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. Average price data for select utility, automotive fuel, and food items are also available.

Consumer Confidence Index (CCI)

The Consumer Confidence Index reflects prevailing business conditions and likely developments for the months ahead. This monthly report details consumer attitudes, buying intentions, vacation plans, and consumer expectations for inflation, stock prices, and interest rates.

Current Employment Statistics (CES)

Monthly data on national employment and unemployment, wages and earnings, across all nonagriculture industries, used as indicators of economic trends. Employment data show the well-being of the economy and labor force, Wage changes indicate earnings trends and related labor costs.

Producer Price Index (PPI) 

The Producer Price Index (PPI) program measures the average change over time in the selling prices received by domestic producers for their output. The prices included in the PPI are from the first commercial transaction for many products and some services.

The Monthly Retail Trade Survey provides current estimates of sales at retail and food services stores and inventories held by retail stores. Retail firms provide data on dollar value of retail sales and sales for selected establishments; some firms also provide data on value of  inventories.
